What flowers in August

The perennials, bulbs and shrubs in flower in August, which of them start this month, and how the dates move with your zone.

August is when a bed planted only for June goes flat, and the prairie plants take over: black-eyed Susans, Joe Pye weed, sedums.

480 of the planner's plants are in flower at some point in August in zone 5, and 90 of them start this month. Summer flowers move less with the zone: about a week earlier in zone 7, a week later in zone 3.

480 plants: 334 perennials, 22 bulbs, 41 grasses and 83 shrubs.

A bed at its best in August

The planner was given only the plants on this page that suit zone 6 and full sun, and designed this 16 × 8 ft (4.9 × 2.4 m) bed from them when the page was made. It is a bed for August on purpose, so its design check marks it down for the rest of the year: a real border would add plants for the other seasons.

Planned as a cottage garden: 48 of the 57 plants (84%), bulbs aside, stand alone or in groups of no more than five, small enough for the kinds to mingle. Neither end outweighs the other: the visual weight is split 48 to 52, left to right. Sedum 'Lidakense' repeats along the bed to tie it together.

The planner's own design check: 10 Excellent, 7 Good.
